We are a group of 16 passionate game creators working on amazing titles, some of which are based in the Lord of the Rings 💍 universe, as well as some unannounced IP’s. Black Sail Games has a great organizational culture based on respect, freedom of opinion and long-term investments into staff 😊.

Since we want to provide gamers with AAA-quality experience within the Action Adventure genre, our games do not just have to look great, but also provide outstanding gaming feel. Hence, we are looking for a well-structured Level Designer capable of abstract thinking 👩‍🔬.

As a Level Designer you would work on a 3D Action Adventure game with combat and platforming elements placed in the 1980s distorted reality setting (some of inspirations being Stranger Things season 2 a’ka “The Upside Down”) .

Main responsibilities 🧩

• Conceptualize levels and prepare 2D layouts as well as document level-synopses describing the playthrough and intentions following the narrative of the game
• Greybox and implement these layouts in-engine (UE4)
• Test them, gather and document feedback and iterate until they play amazing
• Generate, document and share level-mechanics as well as implement them
• Collaborate with the project cross functional team, to brainstorm new mechanics & implement and balance the game experience
• Setup, playtest and tweak gameplay event
• Work closely with the team to design and conceptualize high-level world-designs, that provide a holistic view of a campaign-playthrough

Desired qualifications 🤹‍♂️

• A strong portfolio displaying your private and professional work - Ideally +1 year of professional experience as Level Designer
• Elaborate experience in Unreal 4 (Editor)
• Excellent level of English
• Strong knowledge of Level Design concepts and patterns (Guidance, Pacing, Difficulty, etc)
• Basic understanding of general Game Design concepts
• Ability to illustrate and/or prototype your ideas visually using standard industry production tools

Pluses 🤩

• 1 shipped PC/console title
• Degree in architecture or similar
• 3D Modelling experience and skills
• An eye for artistic composition of environments
• Good presentation skills
