Dark Lord is a small, international indie team working fully remotely before it was cool. Right now we are developing Glitchpunk, which can be decribed as GTA2 meets cyberpunk genre, inspired by Blade Runner, Ghost in the Shell and Akira.

We are looking for an EXPERIENCED Level Designer who will take the weight of creation of our detailed cities in top-down perspective, using Unreal Engine 4. You will be supported on all phases by the Lead Designer so you can focus on making levels that both play and look good. All the misions, logic, coding and such will be taken care of by someone else. The concepts for all the content you will be developing have already been prepared. There’s no need for modeling skills also as we make use of an extensive library of properly themed 3D assets and custom materials.

We plan this task to last at least until October 2021, inclusively. The amount of work includes designing 2 new cities and also improving visuals and geometry on 2 existing ones.

Responsibilites:

  • Blocking out new areas, basing on provided concepts,
  • Reacting to feedback and taking part in playthrough and brainstorm sessions regarding the general flow and user experience,
  • Meshing the levels when the geometry’s first pass is complete, along with lighting and particle effects,
  • Optimising at all stages accordingly, which means using common UE4 practices to reduce the unnecessary overhead and designing the levels with optimisation in mind,
  • Experience in working with version control (we use Perforce), you don’t have to be a power user, but at least please don’t leave the files checked out and then go on holidays,
  • You have to play those levels and see if the scale, metrics, verticality and overall feeling is spot on; levels are where gameplay happens so we expect you to give feedback on what we need to make the game better and how we can help you make the best cities possible.

Requirements:

  • Experience in working as a Level Designer in a team, preferably on a number of commercial projects (top-down action or cyberpunk games would be a plus),
  • Solid understanding of Unreal Engine 4, along with basic optimisation tools and techniques,
  • Being a self-discplined individual, who will ask questions when needed and provide regular updates to the team, working on a schedule and keeping high ethics.

Would be cool if:

  • You are especially good at speed level design and know how to save time and differentiate between polish and prototyping stages, because we prefer to have a solid first blockout iteration of a whole city with a bunch of landmarks in a week rather than an oscar-worthy back alley scenery that 1% players will never visit anyway,
  • You are a fan of the cyberpunk media, so that you can distinguish and go beyond the generic aesthetics and give your own twist to the style that you know well (we will help you with that),
  • You can handle B2B, sending us invoice monthly based on a contract.

Our offer:

  • Fully flexible working hours, you just have to provide stuff on schedule and show up on online meetings (usually bi-weekly),
  • B2B contract or UoD with fair salary paid monthly (3000 - 6000 PLN net, based on experience),

  • You literally have to just work on levels’ geometry and meshing (no coding or modeling) making sure it's fun to navigate and pleasing to look at, we take care of everything else and we will support you whenever needed.

We don’t need your cover letter, just your CV and portfolio. As part of the recruitment process we will probably ask you to do a small level design\art oriented task. The level of complexity will depend on how much experience you have - if you will show examples of work that show your expertise within cyberpunk and\or top-down action games, then it will be just a quick check for a proof that you can handle it.
