Combat Designer

Bloober Team is looking for a Combat Designer with proven experience to join the team of talented developers.
The Combat Designer will work closely with the rest of the development team to determine overall flow, look, and feel of the entire combat experience. This includes creation and maintenance of core combat mechanics, character abilities and player feedback. They will be responsible for prototyping, maintaining and improving combat experience.

The ideal candidate will be self-motivated designer with a deep passion for games and combat systems, who can collaboratively plan and create interesting, visceral combat including the main character, AI characters and gameplay objects across varied encounter types while working on both conceptual and practical level.
Position involves creating compelling combat from concept to implementation using Unreal 4, overseeing combat design, collaborating with Lead Designer, Engineering and animation teams.

Your tasks:

  • Design, implement, tune and maintain combat systems, character moves, abilities, items, weapons and character statistics.
  • Ownership of the core combat mechanic and specification of associated animation.
  • Ownership of the development of combat features and improvement efforts, from iteration through delivery to players.
  • Planning for AI needs, behavior scripting, and tuning to create varied combat encounters
  • Maintain clear and concise documentation for all combat mechanics, balance, and systems.
  • Validation of all combat design scoping estimates.
  • Utilization of team, player and focus feedback to improve the look and feel of the combat experience
  • Collaboration with animation and audio teams to determine general feel and pace of combat actions utilizing third person animations.

Requirements:

  • Minimum 4+ years of game development experience, with at least 2 years in Combat Design role on a shipped title with PVE experience.
  • Understanding and experience in balancing interactions between player abilities, stats, items, and weapons using iterative approach.
  • Great written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to think logically and break down complex problems, with attention to detail.

Pluses:

  • Experience developing third person melee and ranged combat
  • Experience directly tuning the animation graphs and timing windows for attacks, blocks, branching actions, hit reactions and other key combat animations
  • Exceptional attention to details
  • Love of computer and console horror games
